Texas Commission on the Arts officially designates new Edinburg Arts District
The city joins Brownsville, Galveston and Lufkin in this year's designations, bringing the state total to 61.
In a major milestone for the Rio Grande Valley, the Texas Commission on the Arts has officially approved the designation of the new Edinburg Arts District.
Edinburg joins three other Texas communities — Brownsville, Galveston and Lufkin — in receiving the state distinction, bringing the total number of cultural districts in Texas to 61. Official designation identifies marketable tourism zones that leverage local arts and heritage to stimulate economic development, boost civic pride and attract visitors. The status also makes qualifying local arts organisations eligible to apply for state Cultural District Project grant funding.
Positioned along the Interstate 69 trade corridor, the newly designated district anchors a community shaped by its proximity to the border and a shared history of traditions and public art. At its heart sits the Edinburg Arts, Culture & Events Center, which houses classrooms, a dance studio, gallery spaces and a ballroom.
“Receiving the state designation for our Cultural Arts District is a testament to what happens when an entire city rallies around creativity, heritage, and civic pride,” said Edinburg Library & Cultural Arts Director Letty Leija. “Hand in hand, we are building a walkable, vibrant corridor that honors our roots while inspiring our future.”
The district is recognised for a year-round event schedule that draws crowds from across South Texas: UTRGV's Festival of International Books and Art, the Edinburg UFO Festival, FridaFest, the South Texas International Film Festival and the Los Muertos Bailan Day of the Dead festival.
The city will host an official celebration in October 2026, with representatives from the Texas Commission on the Arts present to deliver the formal state proclamation.
