Keep grass clippings off the street to protect the drainage system
Clippings blown into the road end up in the storm drains, and the blockages flood the streets they came from.
As residents maintain their lawns, the City of Weslaco encourages everyone to help protect the drainage system by keeping grass clippings off the street.
When clippings are blown or swept into roadways, rainwater eventually carries them into storm drains. Inside the drainage system they combine with dirt, leaves and other debris, creating blockages that restrict the flow of water and increase the risk of localised flooding.
Clippings also affect water quality. As they decompose in local waterways they reduce oxygen levels, which harms aquatic life and the surrounding environment.
Keeping clippings off the street prevents clogged drains and inlets, reduces the risk of flooded streets and neighbourhoods, protects local waterways, and reduces the maintenance cost of clearing drainage infrastructure.
Residents are encouraged to leave clippings on the lawn, bag them, or dispose of them properly rather than blowing them into the street.
