What we are checking

8 questions a person here could answer in a sentence. Each one is a claim we took off the site because we could not confirm it.

Why this page exists

What we are checking

We do not publish what we cannot stand behind. Rather than label it “unconfirmed” and leave it up, we take the claim down and put the question here.

The reason is simple: a caveat does not survive a screenshot. Somebody photographs the useful half of a sentence and sends it to eight people on WhatsApp, and our hedge does not travel with it. Our claims are about real places with real names, so the only safe version is to say nothing until we know.

There are 104 sentences written and stored and not on this site for that reason. Below are the ones a reader could actually answer. If you know one — because you go, you work there, you organise it, or your family has been going for thirty years — tell us. We will publish it, and we will credit you if you want us to.

This page should get shorter. When it does, that is the point.

How many RV parks and seasonal communities are there in the four counties?

The figure everyone repeats is 500-plus, and we have not found the count behind it — only articles stating the number. If you keep a directory, a county list, or you have simply counted, we would like to see it.

Cine El Rey in McAllen — what does it book now?

It is the best-known historic theatre in the Valley and its website is a parked domain. We will not describe a real business from a listing site. If you have been recently, or you book there, tell us what actually happens in that room.

At the jamaicas you go to, does the raffle require you to be present to win?

We know it varies by parish, which is exactly why we will not state it as a rule. What we would like is enough answers to say honestly which is more common, and where.

Do the parishes near you put out seating for the evening band, or should people bring a chair?

A small thing that decides whether a family with a grandmother comes at all. We would rather tell people the truth for their parish than a generalisation for none of them.

Which Valley school districts take which single days off, and where is that published?

Spring break falls in the same week across the Valley; everything else does not, and the districts end the year as much as two weeks apart. It is the most useful unanswered question we have for families, and the calendars are scattered across eighteen sites.

Which flea markets in Starr, Willacy and Cameron counties run on a fixed schedule?

Our pulgas guide names two and both are in Hidalgo, which makes the guide quietly wrong about three quarters of the region it claims to cover.

Rio Grande City — is Fort Ringgold accessible to visitors, and how?

It sits on school district land and the answer appears to be 'sometimes, by arrangement', which is not something we will publish from a guess. We are in Rio Grande City; we would still rather hear it from someone who has done it.

How far ahead are the popular halls booking for spring quinceañeras?

Everyone says 'book in January', and nobody we have asked can say whether that is still true or whether it has moved. If you run a hall, or you booked one this year, tell us what you actually found.
