Mercedes is a small city that hosts one of the largest annual gatherings in the region. The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo runs each March at the show grounds here and combines a youth livestock competition with a professional rodeo, a carnival and a concert lineup — for about ten days the town's daytime population is effectively multiplied.
Mercedes, Weslaco and Donna form a tight mid-Valley cluster where nobody is more than a few minutes from the others, and Mercedes is the one that brings people in from outside it. The local tell: March is not "a busy month" here, it is the month, and the rest of the Valley plans its own March around not scheduling opposite the livestock show.
