Dances
The baile is the backbone of Valley nightlife — norteño, conjunto, cumbia and banda, in dance halls, ballrooms, and rented event centers from Rio Grande City to Brownsville. Most are announced with a flyer a week or two out, which is exactly the kind of event that never makes it onto a national listings site.
A baile is not a concert. At a concert you watch; at a baile you dance, and the band plays sets for people who came to be on the floor. The music is conjunto, norteño, cumbia, banda or Tejano, and the room is a dance hall, a ballroom, a rented event center or a club. It is genuinely all ages — families come, and the last people dancing are frequently the oldest people there.
Two related events are not the same thing and should not be confused. A tardeada is the afternoon version, roughly four to nine, family-attended, very common with quinceañeras and church groups. A matiné is an afternoon session, often all-ages or teen. Different events, different crowds.
If you have never been: the flyer's start time is when the doors open, not when the music starts, and the floor fills late. Most halls charge a cover at the door and many are cash only. Tables are often reserved by group, so do not sit at one that is not yours. Boots and a hat are normal; so are jeans and a t-shirt.
Almost all of this is announced with a flyer a week or two out, which is exactly the kind of event that never reaches a national listings site.
