What to look for in Brownsville
Qué Hay organizes events by the categories people here actually use.
Brownsville is the Cameron County seat and the oldest continuous events calendar in the Valley. Charro Days Fiesta has run since 1938, spans two countries, and takes over the city each February with multiple parades, a rodeo, mariachi and marimba concerts, ballet folklorico, and street dances shared with Matamoros across the river. Nothing else in South Texas is on that scale or that old. Outside February the city leans on downtown programming, the Latin Jazz Festival, the UTRGV Brownsville campus, and the Gladys Porter Zoo.
Brownsville looks toward the coast rather than up the Valley — Port Isabel and the island are its weekend, and Harlingen is the first stop going north. The tell is what February does to the rest of the year: Charro Days is the week downtown Brownsville is the busiest place in four counties, and a great many organizers here plan their own event around not colliding with it.
