Mission has the most distinctive annual calendar in the Valley because it is the only one set by agriculture and migration rather than by a school year or a season of arrivals. The Texas Citrus Fiesta each January celebrates the citrus harvest with a parade, a coronation, and the Product Costume Style Show, in which the garments are made entirely from citrus peel and other plant material — there is nothing comparable anywhere else in Texas. Then in the fall, the Texas Butterfly Festival runs guided field trips out of Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, the World Birding Center headquarters, during peak migration.
Mission runs straight into McAllen with no visible seam, and shares its audience for anything ticketed. What it does not share is the nature calendar — Bentsen is the reason a birder from Ohio books a Valley trip at all, and it is ten minutes from a citrus grove and twenty from a convention center, which is a combination no other city in Texas can offer.
